XO, CDO, OOD Confined to Quarters 2

It was very interesting reading the account of the XO. CDO and OOD being confined to quarters. I was one of the players in this incident since was the 1st Lt. I was also Welfare & Rec Officer and we had a ships party on the beach earlier that afternoon. About 3-4 sailors got out of hand at the party and I had the CDO cancel their liberty and put them on report for their behavior.

One of the men was BM3 Gulzelman from Second Division, who normally was a fine fellow and a good petty officer. He somehow got off the ship that evening, continued hitting the bottle and missed ships movement the next morning. After we were underway for home from Rota the next day, the Chief Engineer came into my stateroom and told me that he was now acting XO and I was acting Operations Officer and also I lost my F Div Officer. The XO, the CDO (OPS OFFICER) and OOD (F Div Off) were relieved of duty, all because of the BM3 missing ships movement after I had cancelled his liberty, and restricted to their cabins except for meals which they took in the wardroom.

We traveled back with a squadron of DD's on the way back fueling them about every other day. Several of them had XO's who were friends of our XO. The XO normally ran the starboard bridge wing during fueling, but I served that function because the Chief Engineer had no experience on deck during fueling. However, when the XO's on the DD's wanted to talk to our XO over the bridge to bridge phones, I handed that duty back to the Chief Engineer to explain what happened to our XO.

All three were returned to duty before we got back home, but of course the XO's career was ruined. I'm glad to know someone else shared my negative feelings about Capt Brady. In many ways he was he was a difficult CO to work for.
