Man Overboard!

Another story by Peter O'Kane on the Transatlantic crossing brought to mind a sad tale. We were heading for the MED in late 1966. The seas were beginning to pick up quite smartly. It was just after lunch and I was in the forward storerooms to get some electric fans that E-Gang had requested.

Word came that the forward tank deck was secured so I started aft with the issue. A young seaman offered to help carry the fans. As he rounded the port side of the mid-ships superstructure, he was swept overboard.

We remained on station for about 24 hrs searching and then were ordered to proceed. That young seaman had be in the Navy about 6 months and left behind a wife and child and about 220 sad shipmates, me especially. I often think about him to this day.

God be with you son.
