North Atlantic

I remember a lot of good stories but one in particular was in the spring of 1966 when our ship was dispatched to the North Atlantic for a special mission to intercept Russian fishing trawlers that were harassing American fishing vessels. We were out something like 30 days without land under our feet.

Food was scarce. It was so scarce that a buddy of mine who was incidentally the barber on the ship went to the mess deck and took a box of Post Toasties, picked the weevil soy, mixed water and sugar with it and got after it. We later ported in Northern Ireland and I took a train ride to Belfast and back. Apart from America it's the most beautiful place I have ever seen.
