A Gross Sea Story

My first moments after reporting on board to the Nan in overhaul at Boston Naval Shipyard found myself renewing acquaintances with Dan Hapke, my former OCS classmate.

Dan was standing on the lower tank deck with a supply PO…Dan scratching his head while saying, "Got me, Hondo"---the supply PO saying, "Sir, I ordered what you requested!"

The delivery consisted of 144 sirens, each boxed individually and of considerable size. Was someone higher up planning to mount these noisemakers on the yardarms during overhaul?

As it turned out, Hapke's intended order was a gross of ˝" washers…he had miss-labeled on the order form one of the 13 digits on the Federal Stock Number…much to his chagrin and the supply PO's who had to off-load the heavy boxes.
