| As navigator on the Nan I was responsible for making sure the Deck Logs were completed and signed in a timely manner by the OOD's. For some reason, the process hit a snag (we had been on deployment for a while), and everyone got behind in this paperwork. I called a meeting one day in the Wardroom to ask for some assistance in getting the old logs caught up, and admonished my shipmates to make sure that their sentence structure and spelling was correct in order to save some time. Shortly thereafter, I kicked back a log submitted by Ray Shipley, and told him to correct some spelling errors. He asked me what the problem was, and I told him---for example---that he had and entry in the log shown incorrectly, and it should be changed to reflect the navigational aid, the "Gray Head Light", instead of his "Gay Head Light". Everybody knows there are no gay headlights, and I thought he was pulling my leg!
Come to find out, sure enough, there is a navigational light called Gay Head! Needless to say, I heard in the Wardroom many sightings of gay headlights for days thereafter, and I ate a lot of crow on that one…
